Auto GradationFirst a few notes on common errors I see users doing. With the latest generation of Olympus cameras, many do not spend any time trying to understand their cameras. On this recent generation I find many users who shoot jpeg's at high ISO using auto Gradation, and then they blame the camera for noisy pictures. I have even seen people making erroneous claims that the E-520 is noisier than the E-510 and E-500. Which is a fallacy and user error. Auto Gradation is a very good feature for Jpeg shooters, but I would only recommend using it up to ISO 800 on the E-3 and E-30, and ISO 400 on the E-520 and E-420. Basically it seems to function somehow like this: to squeeze all the DR out of a camera as possible, it raises the ISO of the dark regions a bit to allow more light into the camera. So if you are shooting ISO 800 in the dark regions you are in effect shooting ISO 1600. So remember, if you are going to go into high ISO territory while shooting Jpeg's, shut off Auto Gradation, it is as simple as that (If you shoot raw this setting doesn't matter).
