Eddie's take on it

The Olympus E-400 is an interesting outlier. By mid-2006, when this camera was released, Olympus already had access and had released a CMOS sensor camera, which offers live view. But they proceeded to release the E-400 with a CCD sensor, and it was released only in Europe. This series of decisions is baffling, but the end result is that this is the most high-res CCD sensor Four Thirds camera, sporting a 10MP sensor.

I recommend reading the CCD Comparison.
